Capsule 2

INCITE

General Information about the Capsule

Name: INICITE
Identifier: ENACTEST_ID_2
Language: English
Category: Exercise
Keywords: Model-based testing, exploratory testing, testing strategy

Description:
The INCITE capsule corresponds to semi-structured clinical interviews to teach testing and promote the A-HA moments in the students.  We define the A-Ha moment when the students realize that they need both approaches (model-based and exploratory, or analytical and empirical, or from requirements and prior knowledge) to test a system properly. Consequently, the main goal of INCITE is to raise students’ awareness that they need different viewpoints to create a successful testing strategy and that the testing process should be model-based and exploratory.

Description of Learning Objectives:

  • Raise students’ awareness that testing should be model-based and exploratory.

Prerequisites

  • Familiarity with test case design techniques.

Classification of the Learning Objectives According to Bloom’s Taxonomy

  1. Students are grouped in pairs to pursue discussion of the case and the test cases.
  2. Students are instructed to dialogue and verbalize all their thoughts to solve the problem by using thinking out loud.
  3. Students receive a brief description of the case, they read it and start creating the test model.
  4. Meanwhile they are designing the test cases, Students answers open-ended questions conducted by an interviewer in order to explore alternative hypotheses about the participant’s thinking.
  5. Students reflect on their answers and improve the test model considering the alternative hypothesis.

Expected Consequences
a) Students will gain awareness of the importance of using both approaches (model based and exploratory) to create a complete testing model.
b) Students will recognize the main concepts involved in the test case design.
